Monster designs

For my inspiration I researched through different video games (Condemned : Criminal Origins, Silent Hill 3 and Shattered Memories and Dead Space), movies (The Wolfman, Dracula, Dead Snow, The Thing, Aliens, Predator and Frankenstein) and books ( H.P Lovecraft and Berserk manga). I found that the more scarier/ creepier the monster was in design had elements of the human figure which i find psychologically creates fear as we can relate to the creature whether on a basic level as in looks or on a more personal level as the creature can think for itself and has the same survival instinct as us humans this is the inspiration i took from my research.

my first initial rough sketches for my monster designs was a mix. I wanted to try different ideas but keeping with the theme of having human elements i.e. facial features.

I then decided to mix human features with an animal/insect and I thought that I would use a creature that exists that people fear anyway e.g spiders and cross that with human like features i.e. face and when sketching I found that the design was slightly disturbing so I followed with this concept and it made it to my final concept.

This is my final concept I kept the color scheme simple so that it would not draw attention from the face on the back of the spider I chose a screaming face as I found this a disturbing emotion as it could depict fear, pain or anger making the concept look more disturbing.

Gun Project

When I was looking for inspiration for a futuristic gun I looked back at my recent played games and that was Halo 4, Dead Space, Gears of War and Half Life 2 which are all set in the future and some patterns emerged in the designs like either the gun is grey and has a more extreme style in the design i.e. Gears of War or its a simple design but brightly colored Halo Needler.

So in my first sketches I had a few ideas on basing the design on an existing gun and using different design choices  to make them look futuristic.

I then took that idea and decided to add color to see which I preferred either the grey look or bright colors. I decided that the bright colors made the gun look more futuristic and would fit in a apocalyptic future like Borderlands or Sunset Overdrive.

I then finalized my gun design adding different features other than bright colors making the gun look more personal to a enemy or protagonist character adding stickers to the gun.
