life drawing

Perspective drawing

in this assignment we where tasked with drawing a 1 point perspective drawing of a city landscape, this is another method used in the industry to help draw environments. the next step i would add to this would be to render this and work more on the shading to help create depth.

Robot

in this assignment we where tasked to draw a robot. my inspiration for the robot ranged from a animalistic design to a steampunk design in the end i decided for a small little police bot i took inspiration from bright 2d retro style games i.e. Broforce and super time force. if i was to do it again i would work on the colouring either take more time on the rendering or finalize the design on Photoshop.

turret

with this load of assignments we first told to design the turret to get us familiar with the basics of creating polygons in Maya. the second lesson was more on creating detail on the turret a more look into the extrusion tool, edge loop and duplicate tools to make a more impressive looking object then we looked into baking textures into the object which helps if you have a a high poly object.

Skeleton warriors

in this homework assignment we had to draw the human skeleton labeling specific bones, i started drawing the skull as this was the part of the skeleton i was most familiar with and then the ribs or thorax. i then drew the other parts of the skeleton i used shading to help differentiate between them and to give extra depth.

i then put all of the pieces together to create the skeleton i then highlighted the different parts in different colors and labeled them. if i was to do this assignment again i would add more detail too the skeleton and there was smaller bones i missed in the final piece.

human proportions

in this assignment we where taught about human proportions. we where tasked to design a dwarf and an elf sticking to the rule that a dwarf is the size of 4.5 heads in scale and the elf was 9.5 heads in scale but the dwarfs heads would be wider than the elves.

silhouettes

in this assignment we where tasked with creating silhouettes of crustacean characters as this a common technique used in the industry, this was a good introduction into certain industry techniques and i will practice this method as it helps build ideas and create a different more interesting creature than originally intended .

3D palace

in this assignment i was tasked at making a 3D model of a palace (image above)
i started out by creating the basic object of the palace with no detail i did this so i could keep the model to scale instead of doing it piece by piece for the more slanted and triangular parts i made a cube and moved and scaled the vertex's to create a more triangular shape.

i then started on the pillars of the palace creating a cube then using the edge loop tool and extruding faces to create the base. once i had the base designed i just duplicated the same object to the proper place.
i used the same technique for the pillars on the side of the palace i then added an edge loop too the wall to create a space for the door on the side of the palace then extruded inwards.

i then added little details including the spikes on top of the roof but unfortunately due to a technical issue and lack of time i could not add textures and add certain features to the palace but i am more than confident that i could finish this quicker and more efficiently if i was to go back to this.

3D Tools

in this assignment task i used a tutorial on Lynda to create some tools to get the basics of certain parts of Maya such as the Extrude tool, Bridge, Duplicate and Bevel. when i go back to this i will add textures and hard edges.

Insect

in this assignment we where tasked in drawing an insectoid creature ( a mix of an insect and human creature ) i took inspiration originally from a beetle to a mosquito after making a load of rough sketches of different designs i decided to make my creature a brute looking character either a boss or side boss character slow but hard hitting being really tall and wide with heavy armor like skin. but during the final concept i decided i did not like the mosquito design which hindered the final design as it was not well grounded if i was to do this assignment again i would focus more on the pre production so that my final piece doesnt look like it come out of nowhere.

Tank

In this assignment we where tasked to draw a armored vehicle using 2 point perspective. I decided to draw a tank as it is a vehicle that has a lot of straight lines and would be easier to draw, and looking at a couple of images I found a few tanks to base my design on.

I started with a simple tank to get a feel for the perspective making the turret square and not adding detail just making a basic. my first attempt came out as expected but when i was to design it again i would try to round out the turret and use lighter lines.
my second attempt uses lighter lines and I attempt to round out the turret it worked as intended i also moved the two points on the horizon line further apart to keep it from looking like it is popping out the next time i would try it i would add detail.
i then added tracks to the tank and a second turret and some panels to make it look more realistic the next step would be adding shading to make the sketch more grounded, i also added an pen outline to bring the sketch out and also to differentiate from the lines.

I then added shading to the tank design.
I looked back on this assignment if i was to do this again i would make my tank more angular and make it look more different than a regular tank maybe more futuristic.

Monster designs

For my inspiration I researched through different video games (Condemned : Criminal Origins, Silent Hill 3 and Shattered Memories and Dead Space), movies (The Wolfman, Dracula, Dead Snow, The Thing, Aliens, Predator and Frankenstein) and books ( H.P Lovecraft and Berserk manga). I found that the more scarier/ creepier the monster was in design had elements of the human figure which i find psychologically creates fear as we can relate to the creature whether on a basic level as in looks or on a more personal level as the creature can think for itself and has the same survival instinct as us humans this is the inspiration i took from my research.

my first initial rough sketches for my monster designs was a mix. I wanted to try different ideas but keeping with the theme of having human elements i.e. facial features.

I then decided to mix human features with an animal/insect and I thought that I would use a creature that exists that people fear anyway e.g spiders and cross that with human like features i.e. face and when sketching I found that the design was slightly disturbing so I followed with this concept and it made it to my final concept.

This is my final concept I kept the color scheme simple so that it would not draw attention from the face on the back of the spider I chose a screaming face as I found this a disturbing emotion as it could depict fear, pain or anger making the concept look more disturbing.
